Pontianak — In preparation for International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, the Pontianak City Police are stepping up their readiness to ensure public safety and order throughout the event.

On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Pontianak Police Chief, Commissioner Adhe Hariadi, led a mass control (Dalmas) drill at the Pontianak Police Headquarters. This exercise serves as a key part of the force’s preparation for the upcoming May Day celebrations, which often include peaceful labor demonstrations.

Also present during the drill were Deputy Police Chief AKBP Hendrawan, Head of Operations Kompol Joko Sutriyatno, Public Order Unit Chief AKP Samidi, and officers from the Dalmas and negotiation teams.

"This training isn’t just for show," explained the Police Chief. "We want every officer to be fully prepared and able to respond quickly, accurately, and appropriately to any situation that may arise during May Day."

The drill included various scenarios such as protest containment formations, negotiation procedures, and crowd dispersal using persuasive, non-violent methods — all in line with standard operating procedures (SOP).

What stands out in this approach is the emphasis on humanist policing. The Pontianak Police are prioritizing dialogue and de-escalation over force, ensuring that peaceful demonstrations can proceed safely.

“May Day is an important moment for workers to express their voices, and we respect that. Our job is to make sure they can do so in a safe and orderly environment,” the Police Chief added.

With this comprehensive preparation, the Pontianak Police reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding public order while maintaining a respectful and professional attitude towards citizens, especially those participating in May Day activities.

The Pontianak Police are fully prepared to ensure that International Workers’ Day 2025 is celebrated peacefully and safely. By combining quick, effective action with a human-centered approach, they aim to provide a secure space for workers to share their aspirations without disrupting public harmony.
