Pontianak, Indonesia – A suspicious man was caught red-handed trying to steal wooden floorboards from an abandoned building located right next to the official residence of the Deputy Governor of West Kalimantan, on Jalan Zainudin. The incident took place around 11:30 AM on Friday, May 30, 2025.

The man’s shady activity was first noticed by a Satpol PP (Public Order Agency) officer who was on guard duty at the deputy governor’s residence. Sensing something off, they immediately reported it to the local police.

Responding quickly, a patrol team from Pontianak City Police rushed to the scene. Once they arrived, they found a man in the act of dismantling the building’s wooden flooring — not just any wood, but belian wood, also known as Bornean ironwood, a highly durable and valuable material.

During the inspection, officers discovered that several of these precious wooden planks had already been removed and stacked, seemingly ready to be taken away. Without delay, the police secured both the suspect and the evidence, bringing them to the Pontianak City Police Station for further questioning and legal processing.

Belian wood, or Bornean ironwood, is known for its strength, durability, and resistance to weather — which is why it’s often used in traditional architecture and important buildings in Indonesia. Because of its high market value, it has unfortunately become a target for theft, especially in abandoned or unguarded places.
