Pontianak — In preparation for International Workers’ Day, or May Day 2025, the Pontianak Police are showing their readiness to ensure safety and public order. On Thursday morning (May 1), Deputy Chief of Pontianak Police, AKBP Hendrawan, S.I.K., M.H., led a personnel readiness parade at the Pontianak Police Headquarters.
This parade wasn't just a formality; it was a crucial part of ensuring that all personnel are ready to handle the planned protest later that afternoon. The main gathering point will be around the Digulis Roundabout in Pontianak, with reports saying the protest will involve a coalition of workers and students from various organizations.
During his speech, AKBP Hendrawan shared an important and reassuring message. He emphasized that while May Day is a significant moment for workers to voice their concerns, it must be done peacefully and orderly.
“May Day is a crucial moment to express aspirations, but we also need to ensure everything runs peacefully without disturbing public order,” he stated in front of hundreds of personnel.
To support the smooth running of security, several strategic points, such as the routes leading to the Digulis Roundabout and government office areas, will be the focus of police efforts. The police have also prepared specialized teams, including crowd control units (raimas), medical teams, and negotiators to maintain a calm and secure environment.
The Deputy Chief also encouraged the protesters to stay calm and not fall for provocations.
“We hope the participants will remain orderly and not get provoked by individuals looking to stir trouble,” he added.
This year’s May Day protests are particularly noteworthy, as they are expected to draw hundreds of people from various groups. With thorough preparations from the police, the hope is that everything will go smoothly and without incident.
The Pontianak Police have confirmed that they are fully prepared to provide maximum security for the comfort and safety of both protesters and the general public.
