If you’re a fan of zombie movies, you’re probably excited about "28 Years Later," the third chapter in the iconic 28 Days Later franchise. But what’s really catching attention isn’t just the story—it’s how director Danny Boyle shot some scenes. Believe it or not, he used 20 iPhones at the same time for certain shots!

Yes, you read that right. Some parts of "28 Years Later" were filmed using a rig with 20 iPhones working together. The reason behind this is actually pretty cool—it’s about nostalgia. Boyle wanted to bring back the feel of the original 2002 movie, which was shot on digital video cameras, kind of like home videos from back then.

“Today, people capture their moments on smartphones, so why not use that for filming?” — Danny Boyle.

But don’t think the whole movie was shot just on iPhones. The production used a mix of equipment: professional cameras, drones, and rigs with 8, 10, and even 20 smartphones. One particular scene filmed with the 20 iPhones really stands out.

Boyle calls this setup a “budget bullet-time” effect. If you remember the bullet-time effect from The Matrix, that’s basically the idea. The 20 iPhones are arranged in a semi-circle to capture the scene from multiple angles simultaneously. During editing, they can switch the viewpoint or create slow-motion and rewind effects that make the action more intense.

This technique works especially well in violent and action-packed scenes, putting viewers right in the middle of the chaos.

On top of that, the film was shot in an ultra-wide format: 2.76:1. That’s comparable to classic 70mm film, meaning the screen is super wide! This adds to the suspense because zombies could appear from anywhere on the screen, keeping audiences glued and alert the whole time.

“With such a wide screen, you have to keep watching closely—infected people can come from anywhere,” Boyle explained.

“28 Years Later” is set to hit theaters on June 20, 2025. If you love horror movies with cool visuals and creative filming techniques, this is definitely one to watch. It’s not just the story that’s exciting, but the way it was made is pretty unique too.
