If you're a Windows 11 user, it's time to fall in love with Notepad all over again! Microsoft just rolled out a major update to the classic Notepad app, and it's not so "basic" anymore. With this update, Notepad now supports text formatting—you can make text bold, italic, add bullet or numbered lists, insert hyperlinks, and even use Markdown!

This exciting update is currently available to users enrolled in the Windows Insider Program, specifically those in the Canary and Dev channels. So if you want to be one of the first to try it out, joining the Insider Program is the way to go.

What’s New in Notepad?

With version 11.2504.50.0, Notepad now features a new toolbar at the top of the app window. This toolbar lets you apply basic formatting to your text, whether you're editing existing content or writing something new. It feels like a lightweight version of Microsoft Word—simple, fast, and now with way more style options!

One of the coolest additions is the ability to switch between visual mode and Markdown mode. You can toggle between them through the “View” menu or by clicking a dedicated button on the bottom toolbar. For those not familiar with it, Markdown is a lightweight markup language that's super popular for writing blog posts, documentation, or even GitHub readme files.

Prefer the Classic Style? You Still Can

Don’t worry if you prefer the old-school Notepad experience. Microsoft made sure that formatting can be turned off completely through the app’s settings. So if you're someone who likes keeping it simple, you can disable formatting and stick to the plain-text style.

And if you change your mind about formatting? There's also a quick option to remove all formatting from your text via the Edit menu or with a handy toolbar button.

Notepad Is Getting Smarter

This update is part of a broader effort to modernize Notepad. Microsoft has already added AI-powered features recently, helping users with smarter text handling and quicker search capabilities. It’s clear that Notepad is evolving into more than just a basic note-taking tool—it’s becoming a lightweight productivity app.

With these new text formatting features and Markdown support, Notepad on Windows 11 is more powerful than ever. You can now create clean, structured documents with ease—no need to switch to a full word processor if you just want to write something quick but polished.

If you use Notepad for jotting down ideas, light coding, or everyday writing, this is a great time to explore what’s new. Make sure you’re running the latest version, and start experimenting with all the new features!
