Nico Williams has officially extended his contract with Athletic Club Bilbao until 2035, following a failed transfer move to Barcelona due to the Catalan giant’s financial difficulties and registration issues.

Barcelona Blocked from Signing Due to Financial Fair Play Rules

Barcelona had long targeted Williams as a top summer signing, especially after his outstanding performances for Spain at UEFA Euro 2024, where he played a vital role in helping La Roja clinch their fourth European Championship title.

Despite public confirmation of interest from Barcelona’s sporting director Deco, the club's well-documented financial problems once again proved to be a roadblock. LaLiga’s strict Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations made it difficult for Barca to register new players, a problem that previously delayed the registration of signings like Dani Olmo and Pau Victor.

Athletic Club Questions Barca’s Financial Capacity

Athletic Bilbao responded to Barcelona’s interest by questioning whether the Catalan side could actually afford Williams. The winger’s previous release clause was set at €58 million, but activating that clause would have further complicated Barcelona’s compliance with FFP regulations.

Rather than waiting for the transfer saga to play out, Williams made a surprise decision to stay loyal to his current club.

Eight-Year Contract Extension with Increased Release Clause

Williams has now signed a new eight-year deal, keeping him at San Mamés until 2035. The new contract includes a release clause that Athletic describes as “a 50% increase” from the previous amount, pushing it up to at least €87 million.

In a statement, Athletic Bilbao praised Williams’ decision, saying:

"This new show of loyalty marks a milestone in Athletic Club's history. Nico's decision to reject dizzying offers from elsewhere reflects the spirit of our club and the ambition to achieve great things with the team of his heart."

Williams: “I Am Where I Want to Be”

Speaking about his decision, the 21-year-old winger said:

"When it comes to making decisions, I follow my heart. I’m where I want to be, with my family. This is my home."

Williams had an impressive 2023–24 season, registering 11 goals and 8 assists across all competitions. His chemistry on the pitch with his older brother, Iñaki Williams, who plays on the opposite flank, has become a defining feature of Athletic's attacking style.

Athletic Bilbao Set for 2025-26 Season Opener

Athletic Club will kick off their 2025–26 LaLiga campaign on August 17 against Sevilla. Their highly anticipated clash with Barcelona is scheduled for late November at Camp Nou — a fixture that will undoubtedly attract significant attention given the recent transfer drama.
