San Francisco – OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, its most advanced flagship model for ChatGPT, now available to all users, including those on the free tier.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, on Friday (Aug 9, 2025), called GPT-5 a “significant leap forward” compared to previous versions.
He likened the upgrade to seeing the first iPhone with a Retina display—once you try it, there’s no going back.
Altman explained the generational differences: GPT-3 was like talking to a high school student, GPT-4 was on par with a college student, while GPT-5 now performs like a PhD-level expert.
The model excels at logical problem-solving, makes fewer mistakes, and handles multi-step tasks with confidence. OpenAI describes GPT-5 as “the best model in the world” for programming, text generation, and even medical applications.

Another major update is the new automatic “thinking mode” system. Previously, users had to manually select a model, but GPT-5 now activates itself when facing complex queries or when explicitly asked to “think deeper.” In the free version, there’s a usage limit—after a certain number of requests, the system will switch to GPT-5 mini.
For developers, OpenAI offers three API versions—GPT-5, GPT-5 mini, and GPT-5 nano—at different price points.
ChatGPT also introduces four new “personalities”: Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Bore, along with the ability to change chat theme colors.
In a live demo, GPT-5 generated hundreds of lines of code for a French language learning game within seconds, then successfully tested it on stage.
The model underwent over 5,000 hours of safety testing to reduce “hallucinations” and provide safer responses.
Altman believes GPT-5 brings OpenAI closer to achieving AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), though he admits it’s not perfect yet, as it cannot learn from real-time data.
This launch marks a new chapter in the global AI race and is expected to influence chatbot usage trends worldwide.
