This situation often happens when someone sends a message and deletes it before the recipient has time to read it. In the chat window, the receiver usually only sees a message that says “this message was deleted,” which often sparks curiosity about what was originally sent.
On Android devices, the system actually keeps a record of notifications from various apps, including messaging applications. These records are stored in the Android Notification History feature, which can be activated directly from the phone’s settings.

When a message is deleted in a messaging app, users can open the notification history to view the text that previously appeared in the notification. The most recent alerts will appear at the top, while other notifications from the past 24 hours are grouped by application.
However, there are a few things users should keep in mind. By default, the Android Notification History feature is usually turned off, meaning it must be manually activated before the system starts recording notifications.
Another limitation is that the system typically stores notifications for only about 24 hours. Messages older than that period will no longer be available in the history.
Due to Android system limitations, the stored information may also be incomplete. Generally, only text messages that appear in notifications can be viewed again, while voice messages, photos, or other files cannot be displayed through the notification history.
If the message is long, the text visible in the notification may also be truncated. This happens because Android only saves the content that appears in the notification panel.
The Android Notification History feature has been available on many modern smartphones for several years. On older Android devices that do not support this feature, users can install third-party applications that function as notification loggers.
