Google Begins Penalizing Android Apps That Drain Battery Too Quickly

Google has started taking stricter action against Android apps that cause smartphone batteries to drain too quickly. The new policy took effect on March 1, 2026, targeting apps that keep the processor running even when the screen is turned off.

Under the new rules, Google may lower the ranking of such apps in the Google Play Store, remove them from recommendations, and add warning notices on their Google Play pages. The move aims to improve battery efficiency across the Android ecosystem.

The main issue highlighted by Google involves the Wake Lock mechanism. This feature allows an app to keep the device’s processor active even after the screen has been turned off.

In some situations, Wake Lock is necessary. For example, it is used when playing music, transferring data, or running location-based services.

However, Google found that many apps use this feature for too long or without a clear reason. As a result, users’ smartphone batteries may drain faster than expected.

In the new policy, Google has defined a clear threshold for problematic behavior. An app may be flagged if it keeps the processor active for an average of more than two hours while the screen is off in at least 5 percent of user sessions over the last 28 days.

Google now considers this behavior a serious app issue, on par with crashes or performance problems that negatively affect user experience.

The company said its analysis of thousands of apps showed that partial Wake Lock is often used inefficiently. In some cases, the problem is caused by third-party libraries or poorly configured background tasks.

The new measures against battery-draining Android apps will be introduced gradually over the coming weeks. Google hopes the policy will encourage developers to optimize their applications and reduce unnecessary battery usage.

With this step, Google also aims to ensure Android users enjoy better performance and longer battery life on their devices.
