Stephen King Praises New Western Horror Calls Opening Scene Pure Shock.

Stephen King, the world-renowned master of horror, has given high praise to the new horror-western film The Wasteland Curse. Directed by Ned Crowley, the film stars Guy Pearce, DeWanda Wise, Bill Pullman, Raul Max Trujillo, Jamie Newman, and Jack Elcott. The global premiere took place on October 3, 2025. King called one of the opening scenes, featuring a child and a horse, a pure shock that leaves viewers stunned.

Set in 1849 during a plague-ridden and violent Wild West, the story follows a recently freed slave and her daughter, whose touch can kill, on a dangerous journey to find a healer. They are accompanied by a widowed doctor who tries to protect the girl from superstition and deadly threats.

According to Stephen King, the film’s dark tone and tension are reminiscent of works by legendary author Cormac McCarthy, known for novels like The Road, No Country for Old Men, and Blood Meridian. King described the film as a quasi-monodramatic western that successfully delivers intense suspense and a grim atmosphere similar to McCarthy’s storytelling. He also compared its impact to his experience watching The Black Phone 2, a recently released horror sequel.

Director Ned Crowley, previously known for the comedy-thriller Middle Man, blends horror, western, and family drama elements into a gripping story. Critics note that the film’s portrayal of a harsh Wild West, disease outbreaks, and supernatural tension creates a truly immersive and thrilling viewing experience.

The film is expected to attract fans of both horror and western genres, especially those who appreciate dark storytelling and complex characters. With direct praise from Stephen King, The Wasteland Curse could become one of the most talked-about horror-western films of the year.
