Huawei is reportedly gearing up for a major breakthrough in the smartphone market. The Chinese tech giant is testing an ultra-thin device that’s expected to be part of the Mate 80 series, set for launch in the fourth quarter of 2025. What makes this phone stand out isn’t just its slim profile but its impressive 2TB of internal storage — a first in the consumer smartphone market.
According to several industry sources on Weibo and Chinese tech outlets, the upcoming Huawei smartphone will feature a body thickness of less than 5.5 millimeters. That would make it thinner than both the iPhone Air (5.5 mm) and the Galaxy S25 Edge (5.8 mm). Despite its ultra-slim design, Huawei reportedly equipped the device with a powerful Kirin 9030 5G chipset, eSIM support, and an efficient cooling system to maintain performance.
One of the most eye-catching features is its massive 2TB storage option. This would set a new record in the consumer smartphone industry, where most high-end devices top out at 1TB. If confirmed, Huawei would become the first brand to offer such enormous internal storage straight out of the box, without the need for additional memory cards. Analysts say this move could help Huawei strengthen its position in the flagship market, especially as Apple and Samsung face slower sales for their premium models.
Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone Air launch in China has reportedly been delayed due to eSIM-related issues with local carriers. This gives Huawei a golden opportunity to capture market attention by launching a capable alternative earlier. Analysts believe that if Huawei moves quickly, it could reclaim dominance in the thin-and-light smartphone category. The company’s strong comeback since the Pura 70 series shows it has regained consumer trust and technical leadership.
On the other hand, both Apple and Samsung are struggling with disappointing sales numbers for their latest releases. Reports indicate that both the iPhone Air and Galaxy S25 Edge have underperformed, with Samsung even reconsidering its plan to discontinue the “Plus” lineup after weak Edge series sales. If this trend continues, Huawei’s upcoming Mate 80 Ultra Thin could be the turning point in the global premium smartphone race.
