Barcelona are planning a bold move for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez as a potential replacement for Robert Lewandowski, according to reports.
Club president Joan Laporta, who is expected to run for re-election in 2026, is reportedly planning to build his next campaign around the promise of signing Alvarez. Laporta is no stranger to offering eye-catching transfer pledges, having previously hinted at a move for Erling Haaland before the Norwegian signed a new deal with Manchester City.
Lewandowski remains a vital part of Barcelona’s attack, with an impressive 40 goals in 48 appearances this season. However, the Polish striker will be approaching 38 years old by 2026, and the club is aware that they must prepare for life after their veteran superstar.
According to MARCA, Laporta sees Alvarez as the ideal successor. Barcelona had shown interest in Alvarez last year, but financial struggles made it impossible to compete with Atletico Madrid, who swooped in with a €95 million (£81.5 million) bid to sign him from Manchester City.
Now, with Barcelona’s financial situation steadily improving under Laporta’s leadership, there’s growing optimism that they will be able to compete for big signings like Alvarez by 2026.
However, signing the 25-year-old won't be easy. Alvarez is under contract at Atletico until 2030 and has quickly become a key player for Diego Simeone's side, scoring 27 goals in 50 appearances during his debut season. He’s thriving alongside former Barcelona star Antoine Griezmann and is reportedly very happy with his decision to join Atletico.
Still, Laporta is ready to make a major push to bring Alvarez to Camp Nou, believing the Argentine could be the centerpiece of Barcelona’s next great team.
