Marc Marquez Admits Jerez Crash Was Due to Overconfidence: "Too Confident in a Left-Hander" |
Marc Marquez saw his shot at a double victory slip away at the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez after crashing out of third place early in the main race on Sunday. This happened just a day after he claimed the Sprint Race win in front of his home fans.
The Gresini Ducati rider lost control in Turn 8 on lap three while chasing Fabio Quartararo and Francesco Bagnaia. After the race, Marquez admitted the crash was caused by having "too much confidence" going into one of his favorite kinds of corners.
“Yesterday’s crash was one I could’ve avoided. I went in too fast, and I realized it. But I still tried to hold the line because I feel really good in left-hand corners. It was actually my first crash of the season in a left turn,” Marquez said after topping the official Monday test at Jerez.
“I believed in myself and said, ‘Okay, I’ll stay on the line.’ But that wasn’t possible. It was just overconfidence. I need to be more careful moving forward.”
Despite dropping to the back with a damaged bike, the eight-time world champion pushed through and managed to finish in 12th place. He even set his fastest lap on lap 18 out of 25 — showing that the pace was still there.
Fewer Crashes, But Costly Mistakes
Compared to 2024, Marquez is crashing far less this season — just three crashes in five rounds so far, compared to seven at this point last year. But what’s frustrating is that two of those crashes happened during the most important moments: the Sunday races at COTA and now at Jerez.
He also had a high-speed highside crash during wet practice at COTA.
“It’s super strange because this year I’m crashing a lot less, but I’ve crashed twice on Sunday,” he said. “The bike is working great. Even without wings, I was riding well again.
“But if I want to fight for the championship, I need to learn from these mistakes.”
Battle Between the Marquez Brothers at the Top
Even with the crash and a P12 finish in Jerez, Marc Marquez is still second in the 2025 MotoGP standings — just one point behind his brother, Alex Marquez, who won the Spanish GP.
With the French Grand Prix at Le Mans coming up on May 9–11, the championship is heating up. A sibling rivalry at the top of the standings? You bet MotoGP fans are here for it.
Focus and Smart Riding Are Key for Marquez
There’s no doubt Marc Marquez is still one of the most competitive riders this season. But even he admits that small mistakes — especially ones caused by overconfidence — can make a big difference in the championship fight.
The speed is there, the talent is proven, but now it’s all about staying focused and making smarter choices on track. If he can do that, there's no reason he can’t reclaim his spot at the very top.
Will Marc bounce back stronger in France? We’ll find out soon!
