Prabowo Becomes the First President in 60 Years to Attend May Day Celebration at Monas, Sharing His Vision for Workers. |
Jakarta – This year's International Workers' Day, or May Day, was truly special. For the first time in 60 years, an Indonesian president attended the event in person, right in the middle of thousands of workers gathered at the National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta. Yes, President Prabowo Subianto made his way to the scene on Thursday, May 1, 2025, to meet and encourage the labor force that filled the area since early morning.
President Prabowo arrived around 10:00 AM local time and immediately greeted the workers who had been waiting for him. With enthusiasm, he waved his hand, shook hands with attendees, and enjoyed the electrifying atmosphere filled with chants and music of workers’ struggles.
His presence wasn’t just symbolic—it was a clear demonstration of the government’s support for workers, the unsung heroes of the nation’s economy. In his speech, President Prabowo expressed his deep appreciation for the crucial role workers play in driving Indonesia's development.
“Happy International Workers' Day, May Day! May God Almighty bless us all. I need your support. Let’s save and protect the wealth of the nation so it can be enjoyed by all the people of Indonesia,” said Prabowo from the main stage.
More than 200,000 workers from across the country filled Monas with their union banners, solidarity flags, and a palpable sense of unity. The scene was lively yet organized, with workers from different unions coming together, united by the cause of improving their lives and their nation.
Prabowo also reinforced his commitment to continue fighting for workers' rights, improving their welfare, and ensuring a fair and mutually beneficial labor system. His focus wasn’t just on wages, but also on legal protections, social security, and broad employment opportunities.
“I will enforce the law. Anyone who steals the nation’s wealth will be punished. This is not just a promise; it is my vow to the people of Indonesia, in front of God Almighty,” he emphasized.
The 2025 May Day celebration was a historic moment that is expected to mark the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between the government and the workers. It signals the government’s genuine intention to listen and collaborate with the labor force.
The event was also attended by numerous key figures, including the Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani, Speaker of the House of Representatives Puan Maharani, Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, several ministers, Indonesian National Armed Forces Commander General Agus Subianto, and National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
Additionally, leaders from international and national labor organizations were present, such as President of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions Said Iqbal, KSPI Chairman Jumhur Hidayat, President of the Confederation of Indonesian Workers' Union Ely Rosita Silaban, and International Confederation of Free Trade Unions Secretary-General Shoya Yoshida.
The attendance of all these figures underscored that the fight for workers' rights is no longer a matter for only a few—it’s a collective struggle for a fairer, more prosperous, and just Indonesia for everyone.
