Jakarta – The atmosphere at the National Monument (Monas) on Thursday, May 1, 2025, was lively and filled with energy. Over 200,000 workers from all over Indonesia gathered in solidarity to celebrate International Labor Day. In the middle of this sea of people, President Prabowo Subianto was present to show his commitment to supporting the rights of Indonesian workers.

During his speech, President Prabowo emphasized the importance of the state's role in ensuring the welfare of workers. He stressed that the government would continue working hard to create a fair, productive, and sustainable labor system.

“We will work tirelessly to ensure that all Indonesians have access to the best healthcare services, affordable medicine, and a prosperous life. The wealth of our country is vast, and it should be shared with all, including the workers,” President Prabowo said, to loud applause.

The President also acknowledged the six main demands raised by labor unions, which included:

  1. Abolition of the outsourcing system,

  2. Passage of the Domestic Worker Protection Bill (PPRT),

  3. Revision of Law No. 13 of 2003 on Employment,

  4. Implementation of a living wage,

  5. Passage of the Asset Seizure Law for anti-corruption efforts,

  6. Establishment of a Task Force for Termination of Employment (PHK).

President Prabowo responded with a serious commitment to address these demands. He announced that the relevant ministries and authorities would review the issues in depth.

To make his commitment concrete, the President revealed plans to establish the National Workers' Welfare Council, which will include labor leaders from across the country. This council will advise the President on any laws or regulations that are not in the best interest of workers.

“I want to give a gift to workers today. This council will help me identify unfair laws, regulations that need improvement. We’ll fix them together,” Prabowo added.

In addition to this, President Prabowo agreed with the proposal to form a PHK Task Force. The aim is clear: to prevent arbitrary terminations and ensure the government steps in when workers' rights are threatened.

The President also highlighted the importance of protecting workers in maritime and fishing sectors. He mentioned that the Domestic Worker Protection Bill would soon be discussed with the House of Representatives and aims to be passed within the next three months.

“Pak Dasco reported to me that the bill will begin discussions next week. We hope to have it completed within three months,” he said optimistically.

Concluding his speech, President Prabowo reaffirmed his commitment to the fight against corruption. He openly expressed support for the Asset Seizure Law, which is one of the key demands from workers.

“I fully support this law. If someone steals, they should return the stolen assets. We’ll pursue it,” he stated firmly.

President Prabowo’s speech and promises on Labor Day 2025 are a breath of fresh air for workers. It’s not just talk – concrete steps are being taken. With the establishment of the Workers’ Welfare Council and the PHK Task Force, along with plans to improve labor laws, Indonesian workers' hopes for a better future seem closer to becoming a reality.
