Rice Stock Hits 23-Year High! Prabowo and Minister Amran Discuss National Food Security Strategy. |
Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto recently received a direct report from Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman about the latest developments in the nation's food security sector. This meeting, held at the Merdeka Palace on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, was an important moment to assess how ready Indonesia is in terms of rice stock and food security.
In a statement to the media, Minister Amran shared some good news: national rice stock has now reached 3.4 million tons! And that’s not the end—if everything goes smoothly, within the next 20 days, the stock could rise to 4 million tons.
“This is the highest stock we’ve had in 23 years,” Amran proudly stated.
It’s not just about the stock—rice absorption from farmers is also showing positive trends. In the past month alone, 1 million tons of rice has been absorbed. When you total it up from January to April 2025, it adds up to 1.7 million tons. This is a significant increase because, in the last five to ten years, the average absorption was only around 1.2 million tons.
Minister Amran also shared that May is expected to be the peak of the national corn harvest. As a result, his team is preparing to absorb a large amount of corn production. “Our corn production looks promising this year, so we need to be ready to absorb it,” he said.
Additionally, a report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also supports this positive outlook. It states that Indonesia’s rice production is projected to rise to 34.6 million tons this year, up from 30 million tons. This is definitely great news for the agricultural sector.
“All this data is from BPS (Statistics Indonesia) and Bulog, and we’re not using data from internal agriculture sources to ensure transparency and objectivity,” Amran explained.
In the meeting, President Prabowo and his ministers also discussed the future of agricultural infrastructure. One of the key topics was irrigation rehabilitation for 2 million hectares of land, which will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR).
“We’ve agreed on this, and, God willing, we’ll start the work this year,” Amran added.
This meeting highlighted the government's commitment under President Prabowo's leadership to strengthen national food security through data-driven strategies and cross-sector collaboration.
The news of rising rice stock and preparations for absorbing the harvest is certainly encouraging, especially for farmers and the general public. With full support from the government, the hope is that Indonesia can continue to be self-sufficient in food production and make progress in the agricultural sector.
