Finally! WhatsApp to Add Username Option So You Can Chat Without Sharing Your Phone Number.

After years of only using phone numbers as the main way to connect, WhatsApp is finally working on a much-requested feature: usernames. This means soon, you’ll be able to chat on WhatsApp without revealing your real phone number—just like on Telegram and other messaging apps.

Yep, you read that right! The feature was recently spotted in the latest beta version of WhatsApp. Although it’s not available to testers yet, the app’s code clearly shows that WhatsApp is actively building this username system behind the scenes.

How Will WhatsApp Usernames Work?

Once this feature rolls out, you’ll be able to create a unique username to replace your phone number. So instead of giving someone your number, you can simply share your username. It’s a huge win for privacy-conscious users who still want to stay connected.

But don’t worry—it’s not going to be a free-for-all. There are a few rules you’ll need to follow when creating your username:

  • Usernames can’t start with “www.” This is to avoid confusion with website links.

  • Usernames must include at least one letter. You can’t use only numbers or symbols.

  • Only certain characters are allowed: lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), periods (.), and underscores (_).

Once you’ve set your username, WhatsApp will celebrate with a little confetti animation. From then on, your username will appear in chats and group conversations.

And if you ever decide to change it later, WhatsApp will send a system message to your contacts—just like when you update your profile photo or change your phone number.

When Is the Release Date?

Right now, the username feature is still in development, and there's no official launch date yet. Even beta testers can’t try it out at this point. But judging by the code changes, it seems WhatsApp is moving full steam ahead.

WhatsApp Also Launches Official App for iPad

In other exciting news, WhatsApp just released its official iPad app. After 15 years of waiting, iPad users finally get a dedicated WhatsApp experience optimized for larger screens.

With the upcoming WhatsApp username feature, users will have more control over their privacy and how they connect with others. It’s a major step that makes WhatsApp more flexible for both personal and professional use. Plus, the new iPad support shows that WhatsApp is serious about improving the user experience across devices.
