CikarangIndonesia’s Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, has issued a stern warning to businesses in the hospitality industry (hotels, restaurants, and cafes) that fail to manage their waste responsibly.

Speaking during a site visit to an industrial area in Cikarang, Hanif emphasized the importance of shared responsibility in preserving the environment. “Waste management is not just about regulations—it’s about showing our commitment to the planet,” he said.

According to Hanif, the hospitality sector in North Jakarta alone produces approximately 1,300 tons of waste daily—700 tons of organic waste and 600 tons of non-organic.

“I’ve seen some progress, but I will continue to monitor it daily. We can’t afford to be complacent,” he stressed. He also instructed local subdistrict heads in North Jakarta to enhance monitoring and enforcement.

Beyond North Jakarta, Hanif pointed out the urgent need to tackle waste in the greater Jakarta metropolitan area (Jabodetabek). One key solution being fast-tracked is the operation of the Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) facility in Rorotan.

“If the RDF Rorotan facility becomes fully operational by December, it can process up to 2,500 tons of waste per day. That would significantly ease the burden on the Bantar Gebang landfill,” he explained.

Jakarta currently produces nearly 9,000 tons of waste daily, while Bantar Gebang handles about 8,000 tons—pushing it beyond capacity.

Without immediate and effective action, Hanif warned, the environmental crisis in Jakarta and surrounding areas could worsen. He called on all stakeholders, especially businesses, to take active roles in sustainable waste management.
