Social media’s been buzzing like crazy after a video went viral showing a traffic cop in Jakarta asking a driver for a so-called “SIM Jakarta.” Yeah, you read that right—SIM Jakarta. And people online are losing it, wondering when the heck a city-based driver’s license became a thing in Indonesia.
So here’s what really went down. According to the Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Director, Kombes Komarudin, the whole thing happened on Saturday, July 12. A cop pulled over a car and asked for the driver’s documents. The driver handed over a license that looked legit, but it turns out it wasn’t issued by the Indonesian National Police (Polri). Because of that, the officer asked for a “SIM Jakarta,” which obviously left people scratching their heads.
Komarudin came forward to clear things up. He said the officer messed up and actually meant to ask for a SIM A—the national standard driver’s license in Indonesia. There’s no such thing as a SIM Jakarta. It was just a communication fail that got caught on camera and blew up online.
Apparently, the license the driver handed over was bluish in color—not the usual white SIM issued by Polri. Based on the look of it, Komarudin guessed it might’ve been a special license issued by the TNI’s Military Police (POM TNI) for driving military vehicles. So, yeah, not something that works for regular civilian driving.
The video first showed up on Instagram via @_thinksmart.id, and the caption pretty much roasted the whole situation. The account pointed out that the driver wasn’t pulled over for speeding, a broken light, or missing mirrors—but just because the license wasn’t “Jakarta-issued.”
They even joked that to drive in Jakarta now, your SIM and your KTP have to match your license plate. That jab sparked even more frustration from the public, with people calling out how ridiculous and confusing traffic rules are starting to sound.
What this all shows is how important clear communication from law enforcement really is. One simple mistake—like saying "SIM Jakarta"—can blow up online and damage public trust fast.
Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a Jakarta-only SIM. Any valid SIM issued by Polri is good to go across the entire country. Got your license in Surabaya? Bandung? Makassar? Doesn’t matter—you’re allowed to drive in Jakarta or anywhere else in Indonesia, no problem.
So if your driver’s license is legal and up to date, and you’re not breaking any laws, no cop should be stopping you just because of where your SIM was issued.
