How to Choose the Best SSD for PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro — No More Deleting Games!

Jakarta – For PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro owners who are running out of storage space, adding an internal SSD is one of the easiest upgrades you can make. While Sony’s consoles already come with super-fast SSDs, the built-in capacity — around 825 GB to 1 TB — often isn’t enough, especially for gamers who play massive AAA titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Thankfully, Sony designed the PS5 with an extra M.2 NVMe slot under the side panel, allowing players to easily expand storage. Unlike external hard drives or USB storage, this internal SSD upgrade lets you install, update, and run games directly from the drive — no file transfers needed. That means you can expand your library freely without deleting old favorites.

According to Sony’s official guidelines, any SSD you install in your PS5 must use a PCIe 4.0 NVMe interface and support a minimum read speed of 5,500 MB/s. “These specifications ensure smooth gameplay and maintain system performance,” Sony explained on its support page.

Size and form factor also matter. The PS5 supports M.2 SSDs in 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 formats. The 2280 format is the most common and easiest to find in stores. You’ll also need to make sure the SSD has a heatsink — either built-in or purchased separately — to prevent overheating and performance drops during long play sessions.

For PS5 Slim owners, there’s one small catch: not all heatsinks will fit the thinner body design. Oversized heatsinks like the ElecGear EL-P5C may not fit properly. Stick with flat, rectangular heatsinks no wider than 25 mm and no thicker than 11.25 mm to ensure proper installation.

Recommended SSD Options:
SSD prices vary depending on capacity, brand, and speed. Here are some great options that meet Sony’s requirements:

The ideal capacity depends on your gaming habits. For casual players, 1 TB should be enough to hold several large titles. For those who share the console with family members or play multiple online games, 2 TB is a smarter long-term choice.

“As a general rule, each additional terabyte costs between $100 and $250 depending on the brand, speed, and whether it comes with a heatsink,” said a console repair technician in South Jakarta, Tuesday (Oct 7, 2025). “If you want top-tier performance for heavy games, pick one with a built-in heatsink — it’s worth it.”

With the right SSD, PS5 users no longer have to worry about deleting unfinished games just to install new ones. Installation is quick and can be done at home with a simple screwdriver. It’s one of the best upgrades to make gaming smoother, faster, and more convenient.

For PS5 Pro users, who already have up to 2 TB of internal storage, an SSD upgrade isn’t a necessity — but it can still be a great bonus. More space means more freedom to explore, download, and switch between titles without worrying about hitting capacity limits.
