A team of divers from the company 1715 Fleet Queens Jewels has discovered more than 1,000 gold and silver coins off the coast of Florida. The treasure is part of the legendary Spanish Treasure Fleet that sank during a powerful hurricane in 1715. The remarkable find includes over a thousand silver reales, five gold escudos, and several rare gold artifacts, all in surprisingly good condition.

The coins were minted in Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia, and some still bear clear mint marks and dates, suggesting they were stored together before being lost when one of the ships was destroyed. The fleet, known as the “1715 Treasure Fleet,” consisted of 12 ships carrying coins and valuable goods from the New World to Spain.

According to historical records, the fleet departed from Cuba in July 1715 but was struck by disaster shortly after setting sail. Eleven of the twelve ships were destroyed by a massive hurricane along Florida’s east coast, scattering the wreckage and treasure across an 80-kilometer stretch. While some of the treasure was recovered soon after the catastrophe, much of it remained hidden on the ocean floor for over three centuries until this modern discovery.

Sal Gutsuzo, operations director of 1715 Fleet Queens Jewels, described the discovery as an extraordinary and rare event for maritime history. “Each coin is a living link to the people who sailed and traded during the height of the Spanish Empire. Finding over a thousand of them at once is a once-in-a-lifetime discovery,” he said in an official statement.

All recovered artifacts will undergo conservation to preserve their metallic composition. Local authorities and the 1715 Fleet Queens Jewels team plan to exhibit the treasures in several Florida museums, allowing the public to witness firsthand the legacy of Spain’s 18th-century maritime trade.

The discovery is also expected to boost historical tourism along Florida’s Treasure Coast, a region famous for the shipwrecks of Spanish galleons lost to hurricanes. Experts hope this find will encourage further exploration and reveal even more hidden stories from the fateful 1715 maritime tragedy.
