Ferran Torres on Fire! Emotional Hat-Trick Turns La Cartuja Into His Stadium as Barcelona Beat Betis 5–3

Ferran Torres on Fire! Emotional Hat-Trick Turns La Cartuja Into His Stadium as Barcelona Beat Betis 5–3

Ferran Torres once again proved he’s one of Barcelona’s most reliable goal scorers. The forward delivered a stunning hat-trick at the Estadio La Cartuja, leading the Blaugrana to a thrilling 5–3 victory over Real Betis in an eight-goal showdown.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick even said that La Cartuja “belongs to Ferran Torres,” as the Spanish striker has now scored two hat-tricks at the venue — both against Betis.

La Cartuja Offers No Comfort for Betis

With their main home ground, Estadio Benito Villamarín, undergoing renovations, Real Betis have been using La Cartuja as a temporary home. But instead of bringing luck, the stadium proved to be a nightmare for the hosts.

Barcelona were sharp and clinical from the start. Torres struck three times in the first half, while Roony Bardghji and Lamine Yamal added more goals to secure the win.

Interestingly, Torres also scored a hat-trick at this same stadium back in 2020 when he helped Spain destroy Germany 6–0 in the UEFA Nations League. No wonder Flick showered him with praise.

Flick: “La Cartuja is Ferran Torres’ Stadium”

After the match, Hansi Flick highlighted Torres’ intelligence and composure.

“Ferran is a very smart player. He reads spaces incredibly well, and today he showed that perfectly,” said Flick.

“He has strong mentality and great confidence. He always shows up when the team needs him. This stadium feels like it’s made for him — even with the national team he scored a hat-trick here. He deserves to start.”

The numbers back up his performance: Torres scored three goals from five shots, posting an expected goals (xG) of 1.03, with every attempt hitting the target.

A True Betis Specialist

Another interesting fact: Both of Torres’ LaLiga hat-tricks have come against Betis, and both happened away from home. Earlier in January 2024, he also netted a hat-trick in Barcelona’s 4–2 win at the Benito Villamarín.

In other words, Betis has become his favorite opponent.

Barcelona Extend Lead, Betis Slip Behind

With this crucial victory, Barcelona are now four points clear of Real Madrid, who still have to face Celta Vigo. Betis remain in fifth place, sitting seven points away from the top four.

Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini admitted that his team lacked finishing quality in key moments.

“We weren’t effective enough in the first half. Barcelona had similar chances but scored theirs. Defensively, it was a disastrous match for us,” Pellegrini said.

This result is particularly painful considering Betis entered the match with one of the strongest defenses in LaLiga.

Next Stop: Champions League

Barcelona now shift their focus to the Champions League, where they will host Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday. After that, they return to LaLiga action against Osasuna on December 13 at Camp Nou.
