Lego is once again shaking up the toy industry. At CES 2026, the iconic brand officially introduced Smart Brick, a next-generation Lego block powered by a built-in computer and multiple sensors. Lego calls it the biggest innovation in its building system in the last 50 years, since the debut of Lego minifigures back in 1978.

From the outside, Smart Brick still looks like a classic 2 x 4 Lego piece. But inside, it’s a whole different story.

Smart Lego That Reacts to Movement, Figures, and Play Actions

Smart Brick can read NFC tags embedded in special tiles and minifigures. It can also detect nearby Smart Bricks, allowing different parts of a set to interact with each other in real time.

This technology makes Lego builds feel alive. Spaceships can play engine sounds, lightsabers can hum when moved, and minifigures can trigger music or sound effects depending on what’s happening in the scene. The first Lego sets to use Smart Brick technology will be based on Star Wars.

No Batteries, Wireless Charging Included

Unlike previous interactive Lego products such as Lego Mario, Smart Brick does not rely on disposable batteries. Instead, it uses wireless charging, and a single charging pad can power multiple bricks at once.

According to Lego, the internal battery is designed to stay reliable even after long periods of inactivity, so kids can jump back into play without worrying about dead bricks.

Packed With Sensors and Smart Connectivity

Inside Smart Brick, Lego has packed light sensors, motion sensors, sound sensors, and Bluetooth connectivity. These bricks can form a mesh network, allowing them to understand each other’s position and orientation.

For example, the system can tell when a Lego car flips over or determine which spaceship crosses the finish line first. The processor itself is a custom-built ASIC chip, smaller than a single Lego stud, and it can be updated through a smartphone app.

Microphone Works as a Virtual Button

The built-in microphone is not designed for recording audio. Instead, it acts like a virtual control button. Smart Brick can respond to claps or gentle blows of air, opening creative play possibilities. Lego even suggests using it in birthday cake builds that react when candles are blown out.

Lego also confirmed that Smart Brick does not include cameras or artificial intelligence, keeping the system safe and child-friendly.

Price and Release Date

The first Lego sets featuring Smart Brick will launch on March 1, 2026. Prices are expected to range from around $75 to $160, depending on the set. Due to the advanced electronics, these sets will be more compact than traditional Lego collections.

A Long-Term Vision Beyond Star Wars

Lego emphasizes that Smart Brick is not a one-time experiment. The company plans to expand the ecosystem with future updates, new Lego sets, and additional technologies. Over time, Smart Brick will move beyond Star Wars and into other Lego themes.

Previously, Lego also released a unique Transformer-style set inspired by Stranger Things and set a new record with its most expensive product ever, the Death Star Lego set, priced at around $1,000.

With Smart Brick, Lego is entering a new era where building isn’t just about stacking bricks, but about interaction, sound, motion, and immersive play.
