| Pep Guardiola to Man City: Stop Doing the Math, Just Win Against Galatasaray. |
Picture this: a packed Etihad Stadium, tension in the air, and Manchester City standing at a crossroads in the Champions League. With qualification scenarios flying around, Pep Guardiola has a clear message for his players — forget the calculations, focus on winning.
Manchester City head into their final league-phase clash against Galatasaray on Wednesday knowing one thing for sure: a positive result gives them the best shot at finishing inside the top eight and securing automatic qualification to the Champions League round of 16.
Right now, City sit 11th in the 36-team standings with 13 points. They’re level on points with seven other clubs — including PSG, Newcastle, Chelsea, and Barcelona — but a surprise 3–1 loss to Bodo/Glimt last week pushed them outside the top-eight zone on goal difference.
Despite the tight race, Guardiola doesn’t want his squad distracted by permutations and what-ifs.
“Of course I’d like to have more points, but this is what we deserve so far,” Guardiola told reporters. “We just have to focus on winning our game, and then we’ll see where we finish.”
According to the City boss, the final picture may only become clear in the closing minutes. Still, he insists that worrying about goal difference or other results is the wrong approach.
“In the last 10 minutes we’ll see how things stand. But the key is our game. That’s it,” he said.
This match also marks a first-ever meeting between Manchester City and Galatasaray — and Guardiola’s first time facing the Turkish giants. And he’s under no illusion about how tough the challenge will be.
“They’re top of the Turkish league, full of quality players,” Guardiola added. “We’ll need an incredible effort, especially with our fans behind us.”
City’s recent Champions League form has been shaky. They’ve lost two of their last three matches in the competition, a rare dip compared to their usual European consistency.
But Galatasaray arrive in Manchester with confidence and history on their side. They currently lead the Turkish Super Lig and have a habit of troubling Premier League teams in Europe. In fact, the last English side to beat them in the Champions League was Arsenal — all the way back in December 2014.
Since then, Galatasaray are unbeaten in three Champions League games against English clubs, including a headline-grabbing 1–0 win over Liverpool earlier this season.
Adding extra spice to the matchup are two familiar faces in yellow and red: Ilkay Gundogan and Leroy Sane. Both former City stars, both once key pieces in Guardiola’s system.
Gundogan made 358 appearances for City across all competitions and captained the side during their historic treble-winning campaign. Sane, meanwhile, racked up 81 goal contributions in just 135 games before leaving for Bayern Munich in 2020.
Guardiola had nothing but praise for the duo.
“I’m grateful to both of them. Incredible players, great people,” he said. “Gundogan was a leader in big moments, and Leroy gave us something special. Top players.”
So now, it all comes down to one night at the Etihad. No calculators, no overthinking — just 90 minutes to decide City’s Champions League fate.
