Paris Saint-Germain once again proved their dominance in French football. PSG were crowned 2025 French Super Cup champions after defeating arch-rivals Marseille in a tense penalty shootout.
The Trophee des Champions match was held at Jaber Al Ahmad International Stadium, Ardiya, Kuwait, on Thursday night, January 8, 2026 local time. The game delivered high drama from start to finish, ending in a 2-2 draw after normal time before PSG sealed a convincing 4-1 victory on penalties.
Marseille started the match aggressively and showed their attacking intent early. A dangerous header from Leonardo Balerdi forced PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier into a crucial save to keep his team level.
Despite Marseille’s early pressure, PSG struck first. Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a clinical finish that beat Marseille keeper Geronimo Rulli, giving PSG a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, Marseille pushed harder and finally found the equalizer in the 76th minute. Mason Greenwood calmly converted a penalty, bringing the score to 1-1 and reigniting the contest.
The momentum swung again late in the match. In the 87th minute, Marseille took the lead after an unfortunate own goal by PSG defender Willian Pacho, making it 2-1 and putting PSG under serious pressure.
Just when it looked like Marseille would lift the trophy, PSG showed their champion mentality. Deep into stoppage time, Goncalo Ramos scored a dramatic equalizer in the 90+5 minute after receiving a precise assist from Bradley Barcola. The goal forced the match into a penalty shootout as the score remained 2-2 at full time.
In the shootout, PSG were flawless. All four of their penalty takers successfully converted their attempts, while Marseille managed to score only once. The 4-1 shootout win secured PSG the 2025 French Super Cup title.
This victory adds yet another trophy to PSG’s impressive Super Cup collection. The Paris-based club previously won the competition in 1995, 1998, and consecutively from 2013 to 2020, before lifting the trophy again in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
With this triumph, PSG reaffirm their status as the dominant force in French football and begin 2025 with silverware. For Marseille, the defeat is painful, but their spirited performance offers optimism heading into the rest of the season.
