| Lucas Chevalier’s Penalty Heroics Lead PSG to Trophee des Champions Glory Over Marseille. |
Paris Saint-Germain once again proved their dominance, and this time the spotlight belonged to Lucas Chevalier. The PSG goalkeeper emerged as the decisive hero, guiding his team to victory over Marseille through a dramatic penalty shoot-out in the Trophee des Champions.
The final, held in Kuwait on Thursday, delivered high tension from start to finish. PSG and Marseille were locked in a 2-2 draw after normal time, forcing the match into penalties, where the Parisian side sealed a convincing 4-1 win.
PSG initially looked in control. Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring early, giving his side confidence. However, the momentum shifted sharply late in the game. Marseille refused to give up and struck twice within 11 minutes, briefly putting PSG on the brink of defeat.
Just when pressure was at its highest, PSG showed their champion mentality. Goncalo Ramos stepped up with a crucial equalizer, pushing the match into a penalty shoot-out. That moment set the stage for Lucas Chevalier to become the difference-maker.
Despite earlier conceding a penalty that allowed Mason Greenwood to score, Chevalier redeemed himself in spectacular fashion. He denied spot-kicks from Matt O’Riley and Hamad Traore, crushing Marseille’s hopes and securing the trophy for PSG.
After the match, Chevalier admitted he was confident going into penalties, even after a challenging period in his career.
“The last six months haven’t been easy, and even this match was tough,” Chevalier said. “But I knew that if it came down to penalties, I would make the saves.”
The former Lille goalkeeper, who joined PSG last summer, emphasized his determination to help the team succeed.
“Today I was fully focused on helping the team win this trophy. I’m still adapting and learning, but I’m very happy for myself and for PSG,” he added.
This victory marked PSG’s 14th Trophee des Champions title, including four consecutive wins in the competition. Still, captain Marquinhos acknowledged that Marseille pushed them to the limit.
“They believed until the very end,” Marquinhos said. “They fought hard, but in the end, they couldn’t finish it.”
According to the Brazilian defender, matches like this are valuable for PSG’s growth. “Facing strong opposition like this helps us improve. It challenges us,” he explained.
PSG and Marseille are set to meet again in Ligue 1 on February 8. Marquinhos is confident that Luis Enrique’s squad will be even stronger by then.
“It’s a very important moment in the season,” he said. “In a month, we’ll be better prepared and deliver a much stronger performance.”
Beyond the trophy itself, this win highlighted PSG’s resilience and underlined Lucas Chevalier’s growing importance as a key figure between the posts for the French champions.
