Thousands of residents from different religious backgrounds attended a large communal iftar event held at the Grand Mosque area of Singkawang City, West Kalimantan, on Saturday. The gathering highlighted the strong spirit of tolerance and unity that characterizes the city’s diverse community.

Muslim and non-Muslim residents gathered together in the mosque area to take part in the activities leading up to the breaking of the fast. A warm and friendly atmosphere was evident as people interacted with one another regardless of their religious or cultural backgrounds.

Deputy Mayor of Singkawang, Muhammadin, said the event symbolized the strong sense of coexistence that has long been maintained in the city.

“This event is a powerful symbol of the tolerance and togetherness of the people of Singkawang, who have long lived side by side in diversity of ethnicity, religion, and culture,” he said.

A Symbol of Tolerance and Brotherhood

Muhammadin explained that the presence of people from various backgrounds at the communal iftar reflected the close bonds that exist within the community.

According to him, the event was not merely a moment to break the fast during the holy month of Ramadan, but also an opportunity to strengthen the sense of unity that has long been a hallmark of Singkawang.

“This large communal iftar is not just about breaking the fast during Ramadan, but also a real expression of togetherness and brotherhood among the people of Singkawang,” Muhammadin said.

He added that the participation of non-Muslim residents in the event reflected the strong values of tolerance that have long been preserved in the city.

Unity in Diversity

Muhammadin emphasized that the solidarity shown by Singkawang residents can serve as an example of how differences can become a strength in building social harmony.

He noted that events involving various elements of society demonstrate that differences are not barriers to living peacefully and respectfully together.

“Through activities like this, we show that Singkawang is a city that lives in brotherhood. Despite our differences, the community remains united with a spirit of togetherness and mutual respect,” he said.

Ramadan Values Strengthen Social Solidarity

He added that the values of Ramadan—such as sincerity, compassion, and the spirit of sharing—are expected not only to be experienced by Muslims but also to inspire the wider community.

According to him, moments of togetherness like this can help strengthen social solidarity within a diverse society.

Muhammadin also encouraged residents to continue maintaining harmony and strengthening the sense of unity that has become a defining characteristic of Singkawang.

“This large communal iftar beautifully illustrates how the people of Singkawang preserve harmony. Thousands gather without regard to differences, respecting one another and strengthening brotherhood,” he said.

The large communal iftar event reflects how the people of Singkawang continue to nurture tolerance and unity, turning diversity into a strength in building a harmonious social life.
