Melun, France — French archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a large Roman-era city beneath the modern town of Melun, located about 40 kilometers southeast of Paris. This remarkable discovery reveals detailed insights into Roman urban life — from luxury homes to kitchens and ancient water systems.

Traces of an Ancient City Beneath Modern Streets

Excavations spanning roughly 3,500 square meters have revealed a structured network of intersecting roads, forming a classic Roman-style grid layout. These findings suggest that the area was once a major hub — potentially a residential and commercial zone during the height of the Roman Empire.

A Roman Luxury Home With Advanced Features

On the western part of the site, archaeologists discovered a domus — a traditional Roman private residence — covering more than 700 square meters. Despite some structural damage over time, the stone foundations, several rooms, and an interior courtyard have been remarkably preserved.

One of the most impressive parts of this house is a 2.2-meter-deep basement, still intact, complete with ventilation shafts, storage niches, and a staircase. Interestingly, the structure includes a reused column, providing a clear example of adaptive and sustainable construction — surprisingly modern thinking for an ancient civilization.

Roughly 40 meters to the east lies a second complex, about 600 square meters in size. Although partially damaged by modern development, remains of a living area and a kitchen featuring a Roman tile oven and ceramic water pipes were unearthed. These features show that the residents had access to advanced domestic infrastructure for their time.

Wells, Cellars, and Storage Areas Between Buildings

Between the two main buildings, archaeologists identified open spaces used for practical purposes — such as storage pits, small underground cellars, and eight limestone wells. The presence of both residential and agricultural/commercial features highlights the multi-functional nature of the settlement.

One Complex or Separate Buildings?

Researchers are currently analyzing whether the two major structures were independent houses or part of a single, large complex covering more than 2,000 square meters. If they are part of one compound, this would represent an unusually large scale for Roman architecture in this part of France.

Why This Discovery Matters

This find not only enriches our understanding of Roman history in Gaul, but also offers a rare look into how Roman citizens lived — showcasing their architectural sophistication and attention to comfort and utility. It may also open the door for future historical tourism or educational projects in the region.

This discovery serves as a powerful reminder that many stories from the ancient world still lie buried beneath our feet. Through archaeology, we continue to connect with the past and better understand the civilizations that shaped the present.
