Apple has recently issued a serious warning to iPhone users across 100 countries regarding targeted attacks involving powerful spyware. In the message, the tech giant explained that these attacks are similar to those carried out using Pegasus — the notorious spyware developed by Israel's NSO Group that was previously used to surveil activists, journalists, and lawyers.
According to Apple, attacks like these are extremely rare and can cost millions of dollars to execute. They typically target a small number of individuals based on their profession or public role, making them difficult to detect and even harder to prevent.
To avoid tipping off attackers, Apple has chosen not to reveal technical details about the attack or identify who might be behind it. However, the company assured users that the security features built into iOS since 2021 are capable of detecting breaches, even from unknown threats. When a threat is identified, Apple sends out personalized alerts via iMessage, email, and on its official website.
One known recipient of this warning is Dutch activist Eva Vlaardingerbroek, who shared nearly the full contents of the alert online. In it, Apple advises users to immediately turn on Lockdown Mode by going to the “Privacy & Security” section in their iPhone settings, and to update their iOS to version 18.4.1. They also recommend updating all Apple devices and apps in use, and reaching out to security professionals if necessary, such as through the Digital Security Helpline.
Apple emphasized that these kinds of attacks can happen without the user doing anything — simply receiving a malicious message can be enough. Even so, users are urged not to click on suspicious links or open attachments from unknown senders.
It’s also important to note that Apple’s official threat notifications will never include links, ask for Apple ID passwords, or prompt users to install third-party profiles. The company encourages users to stay alert and, if professional help isn’t available, to change passwords on all critical services as a precaution.
