With the FIFA World Cup 2026 just over a year away, former US President Donald Trump spoke out about the rumored tensions between the three host countries — the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Trump assured everyone that there are no conflicts that could threaten the success of the tournament.

Speaking alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the official launch of the FIFA World Cup Task Force, Trump emphasized that despite ongoing trade disputes and some controversial comments, the relationship between the three nations remains strong and cooperative.

“I don’t see any tension here. We get along very well with both countries,” Trump said after meeting Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier that day.

“We had a great meeting. Everything went very well. There’s no tension. We want to do what’s best for the people in each country, and that’s what’s going to happen,” he added.

World Cup 2026 Host Cities and Match Distribution

The 2026 World Cup will be hosted across 16 cities in the three countries. The US will host 11 cities, featuring 74 of the 104 matches. Canada will hold 13 games in Toronto and Vancouver, while Mexico will also host 13 games in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara.

This marks the first time the World Cup returns to North America since the US hosted it in 1994.

Trump’s New Tone with Canada’s Prime Minister

During their meeting, Trump and Carney discussed the upcoming tournament and other topics like international trade and Canadian sovereignty. The tone was notably friendlier compared to Trump’s past relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom Trump often jokingly called “Governor.”

In a public media moment, Carney firmly rejected the idea that Canada would be sold or become the 51st US state. “Canada is not for sale, and we will never be the 51st state,” Carney said diplomatically. Trump responded with a smile, “Never say never,” praising Carney as “a very talented, very good person.”

Canada’s National Team Coach Reacts

Canada’s national soccer coach, Jesse Marsch, has also spoken out against Trump’s remarks about Canada. Before the Concacaf Nations League Finals in March, Marsch criticized the “ridiculous rhetoric” about Canada becoming a US state.

“If I have one message to our president, it’s to lay off the ridiculous talk about Canada being the 51st state,” Marsch said. “As an American, I’m ashamed of the arrogance and disregard shown toward one of our oldest and most loyal allies.”

Focus on a Successful and Secure World Cup

The Task Force made it clear that the US, Canada, and Mexico are fully committed to making the World Cup a huge success. Trump praised the cooperation, calling it “total and complete” and promised the tournament will be “perfect and beautiful.”

He also stressed the US is ready to invest heavily in security to keep everyone safe during the event.

At the same time, US officials reminded fans and visitors that while everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the tournament, they must respect visa rules and leave when their visit is over.

“We want everyone to come to America, spend money, and enjoy soccer,” said US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. “But don’t overstay your visa. Take a road trip, see America, and then go home.”

As the World Cup kicks off on June 11, 2026, all eyes will be on the organizing committees and governments to deliver a smooth and exciting tournament. The US, Canada, and Mexico are united in their goal to make this World Cup unforgettable — both on and off the field.

And of course, fans will be watching closely to see how the three host nations perform on home turf. It’s shaping up to be one of the biggest sporting events in North America’s history!
