Jakarta — President Prabowo Subianto recently led a limited meeting with Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka and several ministers at the Merdeka Palace. The main topic? The People’s School Program! This initiative is designed to help children from impoverished and extremely poor families—especially those in Desil 1—gain access to proper education.

President Prabowo emphasized the importance of careful planning and data-driven strategies for this program. Everything has to be ready from start to finish, ensuring the program is carried out effectively.

“The President wants us to make sure these 53 locations for the People’s School program are fully prepared in terms of planning, execution, and ultimately, the graduation of the students,” said Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf, or Gus Ipul, after the meeting.

It’s not just about buildings and locations; the recruitment of students is also a key part of the discussion. Prabowo insisted that the recruitment process be strict and target the right people. There should be no room for mistakes or admitting students who don't belong.

Gus Ipul also revealed that this year, the program will start at 53 designated locations. But it doesn't stop there. The government is also working on expanding to an additional 200 locations. These sites are currently being surveyed by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) and will be prioritized in areas with high poverty rates and available land.

Now, you might be wondering about the teachers. The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, explained that the recruitment of teachers, school principals, and educational staff will be integrated. They’ll involve both ASN (State Civil Apparatus) teachers and PPPK (Government Contract Teachers) in the recruitment process.

“We’ll coordinate fully to fulfill the staffing needs as per the President’s instructions,” said Abdul Mu'ti.

What’s interesting about this program is that the curriculum won’t be rigid like traditional schools. It will follow a multi-entry and multi-exit system, which means students can enter and graduate based on their readiness and prior education background. It’s a flexible approach!

“The learning process will be adjusted. They don’t have to start at the same time, but they will have clear learning outcomes to achieve,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, stressed that the People’s School program is a great example of evidence-based policy. BPS will fully support the initiative by providing data from the National Socio-Economic Survey (SUSENAS) and the National Social and Economic Single Data (DTSEN) to help map out the most needy areas for the program.

“From the 53 proposed locations, most are in poverty-stricken areas with many school-age children who still aren’t attending school. So, this is the perfect opportunity to provide them with access to education,” explained Amalia.

This program shows that inter-ministerial collaboration and strong data usage can be a key solution to long-term poverty. The goal is for the People’s School program to be an inclusive, sustainable educational breakthrough with a real impact on those who need it the most.

The People’s School program isn’t just any regular education project. It’s a serious step from the government under President Prabowo’s leadership to ensure that children from the most affected families have the same opportunities to build a brighter future. Let’s support this together!
