He broke the previous record held by fellow Argentine and former European star Gonzalo Higuaín, who had 29. What’s even crazier? Higuaín needed 67 matches to get there. Messi? Just 38!
Across all competitions, Messi now has 49 goals in 59 appearances for Inter Miami—mind-blowing numbers, especially considering he's 38 years old. And he's been on fire lately. After going scoreless for two games, Messi bounced back with five goals and two assists in his last three matches. During Wednesday’s 4–2 win over CF Montréal, he scored twice and reached 50 regular-season goal contributions in MLS.
Saturday’s match against Columbus wasn’t just about the record books—it was also Miami’s final game before heading to the FIFA Club World Cup. For the first time, the tournament features 32 teams, and Inter Miami will kick things off against Egypt’s Al-Ahly on June 14 at Hard Rock Stadium. After that, they’ll face Portugal’s FC Porto and Brazil’s Palmeiras in the group stage.
Once the international spotlight fades, Messi and Inter Miami will return to MLS action on June 28 when they take on Atlanta United.
