Batam – Indonesian authorities in the Riau Islands (Polda Kepri) successfully thwarted the smuggling of 5.7 kilograms of MDMB-4en-Pinaca, a dangerous synthetic cannabinoid often mistaken for cocaine, during an operation near Bahagia Beach, Nongsa, Batam. Two suspects were arrested, uncovering a broader international drug trafficking network.

Mistaken for Cocaine, But Even More Harmful

According to Riau Islands Police Chief Inspector General Asep Safrudin, the suspicious substance was initially thought to be cocaine. However, forensic lab tests confirmed it was MDMB-4en-Pinaca, a synthetic compound frequently used in illegal synthetic marijuana (synthetic weed) and vape liquids.

“This is our first seizure of this type of drug. We initially believed it was cocaine, but lab analysis confirmed it’s MDMB-4en-Pinaca. This is a new threat we must take seriously,” said the Police Chief during a press briefing on Friday, July 4.

Part of a Larger Crackdown on Drug Crimes in Riau Islands

The seizure is one of 26 drug-related cases uncovered by the Riau Islands Narcotics Directorate between June 5 and July 3, 2025, resulting in the arrest of 39 suspects. Authorities emphasized the urgent need for tighter surveillance and public awareness, especially in Batam, which remains a high-risk entry point for narcotics due to its strategic location.

“This is a wake-up call. If we can uncover 26 cases in just one month, it shows how serious the drug trafficking problem is here,” said Inspector General Asep.

Cross-Border Drug Smuggling via Sea Routes

Director of the Riau Islands Narcotics Division, Police Commissioner Anggoro Wicaksono, revealed that the shipment originated in Malaysia and was transported via boat to Batam, with plans to reroute it to Jakarta via Karimun Island.

Five individuals were involved in this trafficking attempt, though only two have been captured so far:

• ATA, a courier from Bandung, was caught at Nongsa Beach while attempting to retrieve the shipment.

• SH, served as a facilitator, providing transport and coordinating the boat from Malaysia to Batam.

• AA, Z (a Malaysian national), and N, are still at large and have been placed on the police’s wanted list. Z is believed to be the seller, AA the owner of the drugs, and N the intended recipient in Jakarta.

Facing the Harshest Penalties Under Indonesian Law

The suspects face charges under:

• Article 114 (2) and/or

• Article 112 (2) in conjunction with

• Article 132 (1) of Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics.

The legal consequences are severe, including a minimum of 6 years and up to 20 years imprisonment, life imprisonment, or even the death penalty.

Quartararo described the opening laps of the race as a total disaster. His Yamaha lacked grip from the very start, which made him feel like he was sliding across a wet surface. That issue made it nearly impossible to keep pace with the riders ahead.

“The first few laps were a complete disaster for us. We had zero grip,” Quartararo said after the race. “Especially during the early part of the race, it felt like I was riding in the wet. The bike was sliding everywhere—I couldn’t follow the others, and it was really frustrating.”

“When we accelerate from really slow corners onto the straight, it’s really bad,” he explained. “We have zero grip, and we don’t really know how to manage the power.”

According to Quartararo, other bikes are able to exit slow corners with just the right amount of wheelie and efficient power delivery, while Yamaha’s bike spins the rear tire and lacks usable power in the lower gears.

“They pull away in first and second gear. And when they reach third, fourth, fifth, sixth—we lose even more horsepower,” he added.

Quartararo Says Yamaha Riders Still Working Together Despite Struggles

Even though Quartararo continues to outperform his Yamaha teammates, he stressed that the team environment remains united, with all riders and engineers focused on finding solutions.

“We’re a team and we’re all working together to find the best possible setup,” he said. “Qualifying is one of my strong points, and I’m able to get the most out of the bike. But I also know exactly what we’re missing to go faster.”

He added that experiencing wheelspin in sixth gear just before entering a high-speed corner clearly shows how much more development Yamaha needs.

Inconsistent Results Continue for Quartararo in the 2025 MotoGP Season

Espargaro, who was instrumental in helping Jorge Martin sign with Aprilia for the 2025 season, shared his thoughts at the end of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend. Martin’s journey with Aprilia has been rocky from the start—he has only made one race appearance due to three separate injury incidents, two of which happened while riding the RS-GP and another during training.

Now, Martin’s status for the 2026 MotoGP season is at the center of a legal and contractual tug-of-war.

Jorge Martin’s Team Says He’s Free, Aprilia Disagrees

Martin’s manager, Albert Valera, claims that a performance-based clause in the contract has been triggered, making Martin a free agent for the 2026 season. However, Aprilia disputes that claim, insisting that Martin is still under contract through the end of 2026.

Adding fuel to the fire, Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta has taken Aprilia’s side, stating that Martin is not allowed to race for another MotoGP team until the contractual issue is resolved—either through mutual agreement or a court ruling.

Espargaro: “Why Keep a Rider Who Doesn’t Want to Stay?”

While substituting for the injured Luca Marini at HRC in Assen, Espargaro acknowledged how tough the situation is for both Martin and Aprilia.

“This is really hard. Very, very sad from both sides,” Espargaro said.

“I understand both perspectives… If the clause allows him to leave and he doesn’t want to stay, I don’t understand why the other side would want to hold on to someone who doesn’t want to be there. But of course, I also see how difficult this must be for both parties.”

Espargaro praised Martin’s manager Valera as “brilliant” and admitted that the outcome of the dispute will be hard to predict.

Could Martin Join Honda in 2026? Espargaro Might Play a Bigger Role

The story gets more complicated given Espargaro’s current role as a test and development rider for Honda, which is believed to be Martin’s top alternative if he departs from Aprilia.

Valera has confirmed that Honda is one of the possible destinations, and HRC has publicly expressed interest in signing Jorge Martin for the 2026 MotoGP season.

Aprilia Prepared for Legal Battle, Martin Could Be Sidelined in 2026

Despite the tension, Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola insists that retaining Martin remains the team's priority. However, he also confirmed that Aprilia is ready to defend its position in court if needed.

That could be bad news for Martin. A long legal process could leave him sidelined for the entire 2026 season if no resolution is reached quickly.

Adding more complexity, Aprilia now has less pressure to rush the matter. Marco Bezzecchi, a new RS-GP race winner, has already stepped up as a potential new team leader. Most MotoGP teams have already secured their rider lineups through 2026, which limits Martin’s options if the conflict drags on.

When Will Jorge Martin Return to the Track?

Martin has missed 9 out of the 10 races so far in 2025. His earliest possible return is targeted for the Czech Grand Prix on July 19–21, but Aprilia has said that any comeback decision will depend on his next medical evaluation.

As part of his recovery, Martin recently took a step toward a full MotoGP return by testing a Superbike in Barcelona. While that’s a positive sign, his competitive future remains uncertain.

After completing ten rounds in the 2025 MotoGP World Championship, KTM has yet to take advantage of its available wild card entries—a move that’s raising questions among fans and analysts alike. With Ducati unable to use wild cards due to its top-tier (A) classification under MotoGP’s concession rules, KTM, which currently sits in category C alongside Aprilia, has the opportunity to deploy up to six wild cards per season. But so far, they’ve chosen not to use a single one.

What Is a Wild Card in MotoGP and Why Does It Matter?

In MotoGP, a wild card entry allows manufacturers to field a test rider in selected Grand Prix races. These appearances are especially useful for evaluating new parts or setups in actual race conditions—data that can’t always be replicated in private testing sessions. Wild cards also give manufacturers flexibility to innovate without the same technical restrictions applied to regular full-time race entries.

While Ducati is restricted from using wild cards because of its performance dominance, KTM is fully eligible to bring in its test riders—yet hasn’t done so in 2025.

Why Are Dani Pedrosa and Pol Espargaro Still Sidelined?

KTM has two very experienced test riders: Dani Pedrosa, a MotoGP legend, and Pol Espargaro, who transitioned to a testing role after retiring from full-time competition.

Pedrosa last raced as a wild card in Jerez back in 2024. Espargaro, meanwhile, had three wild card appearances in 2023. But since KTM’s recent financial restructuring, both riders have continued working strictly behind the scenes in testing roles, with no wild card appearances so far this season.

Is Skipping Wild Cards Hurting KTM’s MotoGP Progress?

When asked whether the absence of wild card entries has affected the team’s performance, factory rider Brad Binder didn’t seem too concerned.

“I think the only cool thing about having wild cards is that they get to try something completely different, because they don't fall entirely under our rule book,” Binder said, referring to the more relaxed homologation rules for wild card bikes.

“At the end of the day, it all leads back to the same goal—improving the bike. So I don’t think it’s been a disadvantage.”

Binder also emphasized the experience KTM has on its testing team: “Both of our test riders have done a ton of race laps. They know exactly what they’re doing.”

KTM’s On-Track Performance in the 2025 MotoGP Season

Even without wild card input, KTM has shown moments of promise. Their best race finishes so far have been fourth place, earned by both Pedro Acosta and Maverick Viñales. Viñales also crossed the line in second place in Qatar, but received a post-race penalty for a tire pressure violation, costing the team what would’ve been their first podium of the year.

In the current constructors' standings, KTM sits in third place, over 200 points behind Ducati, but just 8 points behind Aprilia. Honda trails KTM by only 9 points, while Yamaha is trying to catch up from fifth position.

So far this season, race wins have been dominated by Ducati (8 victories), with Aprilia and Honda each claiming one win. Yamaha came close with Fabio Quartararo finishing second in Jerez, although he later retired while leading at Silverstone due to a mechanical issue.

Is KTM Playing the Long Game?

While some fans may be disappointed not to see Pedrosa or Espargaro back on the grid, KTM’s decision could be part of a long-term development strategy. By focusing their efforts solely on private testing and race weekends with full-time riders, they may be aiming for consistency and control over innovation.

Still, with six wild card entries available and world-class riders in their corner, it’s fair to wonder if KTM is missing out on valuable insights that real race conditions can offer. Will they change their approach before the season ends? We’ll have to wait and see.
